Project

Cardano Atlas

Cardano Atlas is an internal hedging tool used by Cardano’s hedge management team. Originally delivered as an Excel plugin, the platform needed to be modernised to support changing compliance and legal requirements, while also improving usability and long-term maintainability. The project involved redesigning the product as a fully web-based application, transforming it from a legacy internal utility into a more robust and future-ready portfolio management tool.

Goals

The primary goal was to redesign Cardano Atlas as a modern web application that could better support the day-to-day needs of hedge managers while addressing the limitations of the existing Excel-based workflow. The new product needed to improve usability, reduce friction in complex tasks and create a more resilient foundation for future compliance and legal changes. A secondary goal was to elevate the interface beyond purely functional internal software. The tool needed to feel polished and credible enough to support client-facing demonstrations, meaning the UX had to balance specialist operational requirements with a clear, professional and well-resolved visual experience.

Approach

This was a deeply user-centred UX project shaped through close collaboration with the hedge managers who used the tool every day. To ground the work in real user needs, I spent a week at Cardano’s headquarters in Rotterdam carrying out in-depth discovery and research sessions with the team. This gave me a detailed understanding of the tool’s existing workflows, operational pain points and the practical demands of the environment it needed to support. Using these insights, I worked on translating a complex financial workflow into a clearer and more efficient digital product experience. I focused on improving structure, usability and interaction patterns so that users could move through tasks more confidently and with less friction. Particular attention was given to testing and refining workflow designs in Figma, where I created detailed prototypes to explore different approaches and gather feedback from internal end users before development. To support consistency and scalability, I also created a design system in Figma based on the UI library used for the product, tailored to incorporate Cardano’s brand. This helped establish a coherent visual and interaction framework for the tool, ensuring the experience was not only more intuitive for users but also more maintainable as the platform evolved.

Deliverables

I delivered the UX and UI design for the new web-based version of Cardano Atlas, including user research, workflow discovery, detailed interface design, interactive prototypes and a Figma-based design system aligned with Cardano’s brand and the project’s technical UI framework. The work provided both a tested product direction and a scalable foundation for implementation.

Outcomes

The project helped move Cardano Atlas from a constrained Excel-based tool to a more modern and user-focused web application. By grounding the redesign in direct user research and iterative prototyping, the new product direction addressed real operational pain points while creating a clearer, more polished experience for internal users. The result was a future-ready platform that better supported both everyday hedge management workflows and the wider strategic presentation of Cardano’s capabilities.
