M-KOPA Impact Report 2021

M-KOPA needed to produce its 2021 Impact Report but had reached an impasse with draft concepts developed by another agency. The team felt the work was not landing in the right way and needed a fresh approach that could better communicate the strength of M-KOPA’s story. I was asked to develop a new proposal and design sample, which led to me being brought on to deliver the full report.

Goals

The goal was to create a clear, credible and visually compelling impact report that reflected M-KOPA’s brand while giving proper weight to the significance of its work across Africa. The report needed to present complex information in a way that felt accessible and engaging, while strengthening the narrative around the company’s social and economic impact. A further objective was to establish a design approach that would support efficient production and collaborative review, allowing the impact team to stay closely involved as the report developed.

Approach

I began by developing a new design proposal and sample spreads to demonstrate a stronger visual and narrative direction for the report. Once the project was secured, I worked closely with M-KOPA’s impact team to refine the report narrative and shape the content into a more coherent and compelling story. To support the design process, I created a new on-brand design system in InDesign that made it possible to build the report efficiently while maintaining consistency throughout. This gave the project a clear visual structure and helped streamline production across multiple pages and content types. I also developed a series of visualisations and infographics to highlight key impact figures, making complex data easier to understand and more engaging for the reader. These elements played a central role in communicating the scale and significance of M-KOPA’s impact. Using Adobe’s collaboration features, I enabled a transparent and responsive feedback process. This allowed the team to review work in context, provide comments quickly and maintain full visibility over the progress of the report as it evolved.

Deliverables

I delivered the full design of M-KOPA’s 2021 Impact Report, including a new visual direction, an InDesign-based design system for efficient production, a suite of visualisations and infographics, and collaborative review workflows that supported the impact team throughout the project.

Outcomes

The final report clearly communicated M-KOPA’s impact across Africa and presented the company’s story in a way that felt both strategic and engaging. It highlighted how M-KOPA was able to defy global trends and generate significant high-quality employment during the COVID-19 pandemic. The completed report went on to receive award recognition, demonstrating the strength of both the narrative and the final design.
